Authentic Pea Soup | From the Dutch Oven

Authentic Dutch Oven Pea Soup
A delicious, classic pea soup prepared in a Dutch oven. Made with pure ingredients like pigtail, sauerkraut, and split peas!

Preparation time: 3 hours
For: 6 persons

Ingredients

  • 500 g split peas
  • 300 g sauerkraut bacon
  • 5 pigtails
  • 1 smoked sausage
  • 2 L water
  • 1 leek
  • 1 winter carrot
  • 2 onions
  • 3 potatoes
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tsp cloves
  • Salt & pepper

Preparation method

  1. Heat the coals in a firestarter and place the Dutch oven above it.
  2. Heat a little olive oil in the pan.
  3. Add the pig tails, sauerkraut bacon, and split peas.
  4. Pour 2 liters of water into the pan and let it simmer for 1.5 hours. Add more coals if necessary to maintain the heat.
  5. Cut the leek, carrot, onion and potatoes into cubes and add.
  6. Finely chop the garlic and stir it into the soup.
  7. Let it steep for another 45 minutes.
  8. Season with cloves, salt and pepper.
  9. Remove the bacon from the pan, cut into cubes and add back in.
  10. Cut the smoked sausage into slices and add.
  11. Remove the pigtails and discard them.
  12. Once the smoked sausage is warm, the soup is ready to serve.
